(Excerpted from Cindy’s blog)
This past weekend turned out to be quite a busy one. First up was the drag race on Friday evening. It took us over an hour to get there, part of that due to traffic and road construction. Once there, we found it a much bigger deal then we thought. I think 1,000 people were there not the couple of hundred we expected. The facility was built in a big field. There were two paved lanes with the grand stand, an announcers both and the start line at one end. At the other end were the lit time result boards. The cars would race down the track, their time would flash up on the board, then they circled back around, behind the grandstand to get in line to go again. There were several hours of practice runs then the cars were put into their class group to race. We actually didn’t stay for that. Rick’s co-worker was racing his car (all cars were regular street cars with engines adjusted for racing). We chatted with him, watched a bit and left. Exhaust fumes and cigarette smoke got the best of us. Not my thing but it was interesting to go once and see what it was all about.
Saturday we drove to Arataki Visitor Centre, about a 30 minute drive. They have a very enjoyable nature walk and a beautiful decked walkway to the centre with fantastic views. Max took some photos which I will put on my Flickr account soon.
Sunday we checked out the local sailing club. Max is going to start sailing once a month with a class. Then we walked along the beach to the next town, Takapuna. We had a little refreshment and then walked thru the local Sunday morning farmer’s market. At that point the tide was in so we walked back on the sidewalk on the main road. It’s fun looking at the various houses on the way.
So we got quite a bit of walking in and the weather was great to boot! Next weekend we are driving up north for a Thanksgiving get together. The island where we are going is said to have wallabes. I hope we see one!
Happy Thanksgiving to All!
